Remote Structural Monitoring System
Project Overview
The Jenners Building, a beloved Category A-listed Victorian structure in Edinburgh,
was undergoing a major renovation project to transform it into a mixed-use retail
and hospitality facility. Preserving the building’s historic features while ensuring
structural integrity during construction was paramount to Graham Group.
The Challenge
The project team at Graham Group needed a reliable system to monitor the movement of the
structure throughout the construction process. This would allow for early detection of any potential
issues and enable timely intervention to safeguard the building’s integrity and ensure the safety of
construction workers.
The Solution
BES Group provided a comprehensive Remote Structural Monitoring system for the Jenners Building
project. Our solution included:
- Tilt meters: We installed eight tilt meters to measure the building’s movement in various locations.
- Total station with monitoring prisms: This system provided additional data points for
comprehensive movement tracking. - SAMS monitoring platform: All collected data was transmitted wirelessly to the SAMS platform,
allowing for real-time monitoring and analysis. - Email notifications: The system was configured to send automated email alerts to designated
personnel if pre-defined movement thresholds were exceeded.
The Results
By partnering with BES Group, the Graham Group achieved the following:
- Early intervention warning: The monitoring system provided early detection of any potential
structural movement issues, allowing for timely intervention and minimising risks. - Structural reliability and peace of mind: The data gathered by the system provided valuable
insights into the building’s behaviour, offering peace of mind to the construction team and
engineers regarding the structure’s stability. - Enhanced project confidence: The accurate data and real-time monitoring increased project
confidence and allowed for more informed decision-making during construction.
