What is Spark-OES Analysis?

Spark-OES analysis is a powerful technique used for elemental analysis of solid metallic samples. It involves the generation of a spark discharge between an electrode and the sample surface, which excites the atoms in the sample. As the excited atoms return to their ground state, they emit characteristic wavelengths of light, which are then analysed to determine the elemental composition of the sample.

What elements can we test?

Spark-OES can detect a wide range of elements, including major constituents and trace elements.  It offers high sensitivity, making it suitable for detecting and quantifying both major constituents and trace elements in metallic samples.

Commonly analysed elements include but are not limited to iron, aluminium, copper, nickel, titanium, zinc, and chromium. Using Spark-OES analysis, we can determine UKAS-accredited element composition on:

Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, Mg, Mn, Si, Sn, Ti, Zn
