GRP (Glass/Fibre Reinforced Plastic) Tank Inspection
Safeguarding Your GRP Tanks with comprehensive specialist inspections by BES Group
In the dynamic world of industrial operations, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks stand as essential assets, playing a crucial role in storing and handling a wide range of chemicals and fluids. However, as these tanks age and undergo the rigors of continuous operation, they become increasingly vulnerable to defects and damage, jeopardising their integrity and posing safety risks.
Our comprehensive Tank inspection capabilities
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
We know that you may be facing challenges with your glass or fibre-reinforced plastic (GRP) tanks. Whether they’re ageing, past their design life, or you need to extend their service life, we can help you assess and mitigate associated risks.
At BES Group, we inspect GRP tanks to identify any potential defects or damage. This includes a visual inspection of the tank’s exterior and interior, as well as non-destructive testing (NDT) methods to help detect issues that may not be visible to the naked eye, such as:
- Ultrasonic Thickness Gauging
- Water Based Fluorescent Dye Penetrant Crack Detection
- Spark Testing (AC or DC Holiday testing to tank lining)
- GRP Barcol Hardness Testing
- Radiography
- Visual Inspection
Destructive Testing
We also use Destructive Testing (DT) methods such as tensile testing, impact testing, and fatigue testing to ensure the strength of your GRP tank.
In addition to this, we can deliver Fitness for Service and basic repair recommendations post assessment by a competent person in line with EEMUA 159 Tank Assessor or ASME Plant Inspector Level II.
We assess the structural and operational integrity of GRP tanks to determine their fitness for service. This includes evaluating the tank’s design, materials, and construction, as well as its operating conditions.
We inspect a variety of assets including:
- Chemical storage tanks
- Scrubbers
- Demisters
- LEV vac receivers
- Low-pressure reactor vessels
Tank Inspections
We can conduct inspections on GRP tanks that are either in service or out of service. This allows us to inspect tanks that are difficult or impossible to access while they are in operation.
To ensure our inspections are comprehensive and accurate, we conduct our inspections in line with the latest industry standards and guidance documents, including:
- EEMUA 225
- SAFed IMG02b
- HSE PM75
We can offer our customers both in-service and out-of-service options.
As part of our service at BES Group, we provide recommendations for continued service and basic repair consultancy to help you extend the life of your GRP tanks. This also includes cleaning, chemical removal, and disposal services.

What is the required frequency of GRP (Glass/Fibre Reinforced Plastic) Tank Inspection?
+
The required frequency of GRP tank inspection depends on several factors, including the type of tank, the contents of the tank, and the operating environment. However, a general rule of thumb is to inspect GRP tanks every 5-10 years.
Key benefits
Reduced Downtime
If a GRP tank fails, it can cause significant downtime for your business or operation. Regular inspection can help to prevent unexpected failures and keep your tanks running smoothly.
Improved Safety
GRP tanks are often used to store hazardous or flammable materials, so it is important to ensure that they are in good condition to prevent leaks or other accidents. Regular inspection can help to identify any potential safety hazards and allow you to take corrective action before they cause a problem.
Extended Tank Life
GRP tanks are typically designed to last for many years, but regular inspection can help to ensure that they reach their full potential lifespan. By identifying and addressing any problems early on, you can prevent them from becoming more serious and costly to repair.
