When is a periodic inspection required?

UK road tankers are required to have a periodic inspection every six years. These inspections will check the overall condition of the tanker and will specifically check the tanker shell, service equipment and the protective lining or coating.
Who is responsible for conducting periodic inspection?

It is the responsibility of the owner or operator of a tanker to ensure that the tanker is regularly inspected and tested. This inspection can be completed by A type C UKAS accredited certification body.
When is intermediate testing required?

Immediate testing of a UK road tanker must be completed every three years. Although not as comprehensive as a periodic inspection, this type of inspection checks for safety issues such as leaks and cracks. The tank shell, service equipment and vapour tightness will be checked during this inspection.
Who is responsible for conducting intermediate inspections?

The owner or operator of the tanker is responsible for ensuring that the equipment complies with the regulations. This inspection must be provided by a UKAS accredited organisation who can conduct inspections in accordance with ADR 6.8. UKRTI are a UKAS accredited inspection body who can provide this service.
When is vapour tightness testing required?

It is a requirement by the CDG regulations that road tankers that carry flammable liquids are inspected and tested regularly. The frequency of the Vapour Tightness Test is every three years to be compliant with the regulations. A requirement of the Safe Load Pass Scheme requires the Vapour Tightness Test to be completed every two years.
