Whilst there is no legal timeline, the recommended FAT Testing frequency depends on your industry. Our electricians will determine how often they think the test needs to be done based on individual factors, but typically industries can follow the below general guidelines:

  • Offices and shops should be tested every five years
  • Factories and industrial premises should be tested every three years
  • Commercial kitchens should be tested annually
  • Construction sites should be tested every three months

Frequently asked questions

Who can carry out a FAT Test?

A FAT Test can only be carried out by a qualified electrician. Our electricians are NICEIC approved and will also be able to carry out various other essential electrical tests and inspections that your premises may require. This can include services such as an EICR Test, Thermal Imaging and Emergency Lighting. Using BES Group for all of your electrical services will help to reduce costs, minimise downtime and streamline the number of your inspection visits.

What happens if I fail the Fixed Electrical Appliance Test (FEAT)?

After the inspection you will be provided an online report outlining whether your appliances have failed or passed. If you have failed the fixed electrical equipment testing, the next steps depend on the nature of the failure.

If your appliance itself has failed, it is your responsibility to replace this as soon as possible and stop using the faulty appliance immediately.

If it has failed due to an electrical component such as the switch fuse spur, we can quote for fixing or replacing this item.

What are the risks of not having a Fixed Appliance Test?

Failing to FAT Test your electrical equipment can lead to serious risks for your team and business, including:

  • Electrical fires
  • Electrical shocks
  • Injuries
  • Downtime
  • Legal liability

What is a FAT Test?

A FAT Test stands for Fixed Appliance Testing but is also known as a Hardwired Appliance Test or Fixed Equipment Testing.  This test ensures the safety of any hardwired appliance and is essentially considered within the industry as a PAT Test for fixed appliances; PAT Testing is for portable appliances with a plug.

How long does a FAT Test last?

The required frequency for a FAT Test depends on your industry. Our electrical technicians can advise on how often you should have a Fixed Appliance Test based on your individual working environment.
