What to do if your EICR report is unsatisfactory

Sometimes inspections don’t always go to plan, and receiving an unsatisfactory EICR report can seem daunting as a business but it’s important to promptly fix any issues. Did you know you could face fines of up to £30,000 for failing to comply with electrical regulations?

Why is it important to follow up an unsatisfactory EICR?

If you don’t rectify the issues highlighted in your report, you are exposing your business, employees and customers to serious risk of accidents such as electrical fires.

An Electrical Installation Certificate Report (EICR) is an official document that outlines the results of an electrical assessment carried out by a qualified engineer. If your report comes back as unsatisfactory, you will have to ensure any remedial electrical work is carried out to fix faults or replace defective assets.

It is important to have an up-to-date EICR report to ensure:

  • Safety
  • Compliance
  • Reduced costs
  • Energy efficiency
  • Legal protection

Failure to act on your unsatisfactory EICR report can have dangerous consequences, create an unsafe environment and potentially leave you with expensive legal bills or even prosecution if there was an accident caused by faulty electrical installations within your premises.

What makes an EICR unsatisfactory?

After an inspection, if faults are found within your building, each issue will be assigned a code. Any issues graded C1, C2 or FI will lead to your EICR inspection being unsatisfactory.

The full list of codes assigned during an unsatisfactory EICR inspection are:

  • C1 Code 1: Danger present – There is an imminent risk of injury or danger that requires immediate action.
  • C2 Code 2: Potentially dangerous – Action must be taken to remove the potential risks as soon as possible.
  • FI: Further investigation – This issue requires further inspection. We will return to carry out further investigation.
  • C3 Code 3: Improvement recommended – A non-urgent code, however we recommended dealing with the issue quickly to keep your building safe.

How do I resolve my unsatisfactory EICR report?

If your report is unsatisfactory, you will need to carry out any remedial work to get the issues in the report investigated and repaired.

If any critical issues are identified, then the engineer who carried out the inspection will let you know how soon these need to be fixed. It will usually be within 28 days, but some issues will require fixing quicker than this.
