LEV
Description
In many work activities, substances that are considered to be hazardous to health are handled, produced, or processed in various ways that result in dust, fumes or gases being released into the workplace atmosphere. Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) can, if properly applied, provide a very effective means of exposure control.
Plant Prep Required
Will be out of action during inspection. Onsite assistance may be required.

Description
A Chain Block (also known as a hand chain hoist) is a mechanism used to lift and lower heavy loads using a chain. Chain blocks contain two wheels which the chain is wound around. When the chain is pulled, it winds around the wheels and begins to lift the item that is attached to the rope or chain via a hook. Chain Blocks can also be attached to lifting slings or chain bags to lift the load more evenly.
Description
(Continued)
A Chain Block contains a lifting chain, a hand chain and a grabbing hook. Most chain blocks are operated using electricity, but manual chain blocks can be used too. First, the chain block needs to be connected to the load via the grabbing hook. Then when the hand chain is pulled, the chain tightens its grip on the wheel and forms a loop inside the mechanism causing a tension which lifts the load from the ground.

Modern, state-of-the-art, high rise passenger lifts can operate at speeds up to 5 metres per second.
Plant Prep Required
Access to motor room will be needed and any access/door release keys. The lift will be out of action during the inspections. Some lifts with deep pits require two people.
Description
Passenger lifts and Passenger / Goods Lifts are the primary means to transfer persons and/or goods from one level to another. Description
Mainly used to carry small amounts of goods i.e. plates from a kitchen, a person should not use a Service Lift. Movement of the car is brought about through either a roped traction drive system, a roped hydraulic drive system or a direct hydraulic system.

Access to motor room will be needed and any access/door release keys. The lift will be out of action during the inspections. Some lifts with deep pits require two people.
Description
A Platform Lift is primarily designed to give reasonably priced access to people who have difficulty with a staircase. On Platform Lifts which serve between 2, or more floor levels, a fully enclosed shaft (rectangular tube) is provided which has relatively smooth internal walls.
Plant Prep Required
Any access/door release keys needed, lift will be out of action during the inspection.
Description
A paternoster is a passenger lift which consists of a chain of open compartments (each usually designed for two persons) that move slowly in a loop up and down inside a building without stopping. Passengers can step on or off at any floor they like.

MEWP
Description
Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), also known as, cherry pickers, beanstalks, access platforms, are used in all sectors of industry and provide a temporary platform for persons working at heights. All MEWPs have the capacity to move from one location either as a purpose built machine with integral road wheel steering facilities, or mounted on a lorry or van. MEWPS are normally electric/hydraulic or diesel hydraulic units and utilise a scissor mechanism, articulated jib or telescopic mast to lift a cage or platform to the desired position where the work is to be carried out. Controls are mounted on/in the platform/cage.
Plant Prep Required
If a surveyor doesn’t hold an IPAF licence (International Powered Access Federation) the assistance of an operator will be required. There must be sufficient room to fully extend the boom and rotate it 360 degrees where applicable.

Vehicle Lifts
Description
Mobile Vehicle lifts, individual columns are used together in car, bus and heavy goods vehicle repair. The mobile units are moved to the vehicle to raise it to a working height. Vehicle lifts are considered as lifting equipment for lifting persons as it is not uncommon for persons to ride on such equipment whilst carrying out routine duties. Persons working underneath a vehicle lift are also considered to be in an equally high risk area.
Plant Prep Required
Clean and free of vehicles. Surveyor may also need steps to gain access to the top depending on height of the column.
Description
Vehicle lifts, also known as motor vehicle lifting tables, motor vehicle lifting platforms, car ramps, lifting arms, ramps, are used extensively by the car industry. Vehicle lift design is varied but the two most popular designs are the electric 2 post screw type which incorporate two pairs of lifting arms, and, the electro/hydraulic 4 post roped type which incorporate a lifting platform. Vehicle lifts are considered as lifting equipment for lifting persons as it is not uncommon for persons to ride on such equipment whilst carrying out routine duties. Persons working underneath a vehicle lift are also considered to be in an equally high risk area.

Building Maintenance Units
Description
Window cleaning equipment is widely used for building maintenance duties, known generally as ‘cradles’ or ‘cradle systems’. The modern term for such equipment is, in fact, ‘Building Maintenance Units’ (BMUs).Window cleaning equipment, normally comprises of a car, cage or cradle, which is suspended on steel wire ropes from a roof top mounted crane system.
Description
(Continued)
The crane system may be mounted on a
single point anchor, or have the
capacity to travel along track systems
which, in both cases, are secured to
the building structure. Manual and
electrically powered systems are
widely used. Actual track and crane
configurations vary to suit the
profile of the building with modern
designs incorporating track turntable
arrangements and crane jib telescopic
and slew facilities.
Plant Prep Required
A skilled operator will be required.
Ariel Ropeway
Description
An aerial tramway, sky tram, cable car, ropeway or aerial tram is a type of aerial lift which uses one or two stationary ropes for support while a third moving rope provides propulsion. With this form of lift, the grip of an aerial tramway cabin is fixed onto the propulsion rope and cannot be decoupled from it during operations.
Plant Prep Required
A skilled operator will be required.
